Understanding the Reiki Levels and What Each One Offers

October 13, 2025

When considering Reiki levels, it’s important to view them through a spiritual lens rather than a technical one.

In essence, your level in Reiki isn’t defined by the number of attunements you’ve received or the length of your practice. Instead, it reflects your capacity to channel universal life energy across different situations and intentions.

There are numerous Reiki schools worldwide — some deeply rooted in traditional Japanese teachings, while others have developed their own attunement methods. Yet, despite these variations, they all share a common foundation: a sacred connection with the spiritual realm.

There Are 3 Usui Reiki Levels
Reiki Level 1 [SHODEN] – beginner teachings;
Reiki Level 2 [OKUDEN] – hidden inner teachings;
Reiki Level 3 [SHINPIDEN] – mystery teachings;

Reiki: A Spiritual Journey Beyond Technique

Reiki is a deeply spiritual practice, a gift received from a higher plane of existence through Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk who lived in the early 1900s.

While its roots are spiritual, Reiki is not bound to any religion. Many people believe they must follow a specific faith to benefit from Reiki, but that’s not true. The universal life energy that Reiki channels flows all around us, connecting the spiritual and physical realms to create the very fabric of our existence.

That’s what makes Reiki accessible to everyone, regardless of their belief system. The divisions we perceive—between science and spirit, or energy and matter—exist only to help us better understand reality. In truth, everything is interconnected.

Each Reiki Level Holds a Unique Purpose

Every Reiki level opens the door to a distinct vibration and a deeper understanding of energy work. However, this progression doesn’t mean one level is “higher” or “stronger” than another—it simply represents a clearer path to awareness and mastery.

There are practitioners at Level 1 who fully embody Reiki’s philosophy, just as there are Reiki Masters who continue to grow and learn. Reiki is a lifelong journey, not a race to the top.

The Evolution of Reiki

Reiki’s origins trace back to early 20th-century Japan, where Mikao Usui received divine inspiration on Mount Kurama after 21 days of fasting, prayer, and meditation. During this sacred experience, he received visions of the Reiki symbols and the methods for channeling universal energy.

Upon his return, Usui began healing others, sharing this gift of energy with compassion and purpose. His teachings inspired many students, among them Chujiro Hayashi, who became the second Grand Master of Reiki. Hayashi later trained Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the Western world.

Together, Usui, Hayashi, and Takata laid the foundation for the modern Reiki practice.

As Reiki spread globally, it naturally evolved into three main levels to guide students through a more structured, gradual learning process. There is no exact record of when or who formalized this structure—it emerged organically as a way to help practitioners better integrate and embody the teachings of Reiki.
